Mitten Maker

When you think of knitting, do you think of “warm woolen mittens” like in the Favorite Things song? Or maybe the three little kittens who lost their mittens? I’ve never thought of myself as a mitten knitter, but I may have to readjust that mindset.

I knit a pair of Flora Mittens as a knitalong project for invisible points last December. They were quick and warm and I really loved them. They felt a bit too big and bulky and didn’t quite work with my coat. I gifted them to Betsy – she’s a city commuter, frequent outdoor walker, and she liked them. She’s knitworthy for sure.

A flash-knitalong (short time period to complete the project) was announced last month to knit a pair of mittens by Skeindeer Knits. I was on the fence about it, as I had just finished a pair and gave them away. Did I really want to knit another pair? In short, yes. Mittens keep your hands warmer than gloves! My fingers are getting cold in their fingerless mitts when I’m outside waiting for the school bus.

I decided to go with the Evja pattern. After diving in the stash, I pulled out Three Irish Girls Springvale DK in Hydrangea and Dream In Color Classy in Ghosttown. Do you see my “design feature”? I’m not sure where my attention was, but that set of vertical lines on the top of the mitten on the right is a whoopsie. By the time I noticed, I decided to live with it.

My yarn and needles are smaller than what is called for in the pattern, so they are a bit snug even after blocking. I’m totally ok with that too. They fit me, they are warm. What more do you want in a mitten?

I’ve submitted my project, got the badge and will have another chunk of yardage awarded!
