I’m very pleased that my latest project is off the needles and on the hands of the recipient! Dan made a special request for convertible mitts. While I didn’t finish them in time for Christmas, they were ready this week for the blast of cold and the storm we are likely to get this weekend.
This is the Broad Street Mittens pattern, a classic from Knitty (Fall 2002!). I rediscovered this skein of Blue Hands Fibers Merino Sock in the Code Monkey colorway. This yarn was originally dyed as part of the “All Raveled Up” sock club. Does anyone else recall – I think it was a fundraiser for Ravelry? It’s been in my stash for 9 or 10 years!
It’s a pretty dark yarn. Outside in the natural light, you can see the navy, deep teal, black and brick colors in there.
For years I have sworn off knitting fingers as they are so fiddly. I kept trying on the mitts as I made them and you know what? Fingers, and fingering weight yarn, really make a difference in how warm they feel. I need a pair. I love that they keep my hands warm and fingers free to assist with zippers, hold the keys, and clip the dog leash easily, but they do catch on the pockets of my coat and they aren’t as snug as I would like. A pair of these or something similar I have queued, in my future.
