Tackling Tunisian Crochet

Over the last few weeks, in between knitting socks, I’ve had the urge to crochet. I wanted that quick-finish gratification feeling! One project that I have been wanting to start is a Hogwarts House Scarf for myself (Ravenclaw) and my husband (Slytherin). This pattern is worked in Tunisian Crochet, a new-to-me skill. I’m working my way through the Tunisian Crochet for Beginners class offered through Craftsy and have a few projects to share!

Spoon Rest

The first project was a swatch to learn the basic Tunisian Simple Stitch. It’s the perfect size for a spoon rest. A few years ago I knit two little squares for our coffee spoons, to catch the drips instead of using a paper towel. Quick, easy & washable, we use them every day! Now we have a new little teal one. The yarn is Kraemer Yarns Tatamy Worsted, a cotton-acrylic blend.

Headband

After swatching, the first actual project is a headband. I enjoyed making it, though I have to say that I’m still trying to figure out how to best hold the hook. I have not determined a comfortable way to hold the hook as I can’t hold it quite the same as a regular crochet hook. Maybe it will just take time. This is also worked in Tatamy Worsted.

Flower Beds

The weather is finally starting to settle down a bit to allow hints of spring sunshine and the flowers to sprout. Last week I wound up so much yarn, in all sorts of colors. Last year I picked up a mini-skein kit of Fat Cat Knits rainbow, sparkly sock yarn at Madison Wool. This year I picked up a skein of Frabjous Fibers Cheshire Cat in Goat’s Beard to use with the minis for a Flower Beds shawl/scarf. My edges are a bit wonky, but I’ve decided to embrace it as my experience in gardening leans towards “let’s see what happens when the good things are wild and free.” Orange is next!

  1. enjoyed your site very much. You are a very talented young lady.I hold my crochet hook similar to holding a pencil. I tried different ways and that was easier.
